Referencing with EU Style Using Zotero

How to set a Zotero installation and account

Installing Zotero and setting up your personal account

Zotero is an open-source reference manager application. Reference management tools help to collect, organise and use collections of bibliographic references. They can generate citations, reference lists and bibliographies in word-processed documents, ensuring consistency and accuracy in citations and references.

This tutorial will guide you through installing Zotero and setting up your personal account.

The most up-to-date version of Zotero can be found at https://www.zotero.org/.

EC staff can download Zotero from the EC store.

Typing ‘zotero’ in the EC store search box (#a) will give you two results: Zotero 6 and Zotero 7. You can choose any of them, but it is recommended to install the latest version.

The installation is simple and requires no additional steps. With the installation, Zotero add-ins for Microsoft Word and LibreOffice are included. If either of these two applications is installed, the respective add-in is added automatically.

In Word, you can see the add-in on the ribbon under the tab Zotero (#a).

It is possible to use Zotero without an account, but you will gain additional functionality if you create an account. For example, you can sync your local reference library with your online library, allowing you to access it through the web. You will also be able to create groups to share collections of references.

To create a Zotero account

Step #1: …go to www.zotero.org and click on Log In.

Step #2: On the login page, click on Register for a free account.

Step #3: fill in the form.

Step #4: Once you have your Zotero credentials, open the application.

On EC laptops, a pop-up box will appear prompting you to enter your EC Welcome credentials to access the web.

Step #5: Once inside Zotero, you need to set up syncing.

In Zotero 7, go to Edit → Settings, and on the Sync tab, enter your Zotero credentials and click on Set Up Syncing.

In Zotero 6, go to Edit → Preferences, and on the Sync tab, enter your Zotero credentials and click on Set Up Syncing.

Once synchronised (step #5), your Zotero reference library will be synchronised with your web library (which you can access via your online account).
