This incisive book provides key interdisciplinary perspectives on the current challenges faced by EU policymakers in framing and implementing a coherent European industrial policy, employing specific case studies from the digital, automotive, steel and defence industries as well as concrete examples of EU policies. Comprehensive and analytical, the book investigates the long-term structural causes of the absence of a strong industrial policy at Union level. Examining the tensions that exist between member states and EU institutions regarding industrial and competition policies, expert contributions assess the conditions for an integrated EU industrial policy to emerge. A comparative analysis between the industrial policies of the EU, US and China is developed as chapters explore how the EU maintains its position in global value chains while other major partners are forced to pursue strategic trade and industrial policies to retain their dominant position.

This book comparatively examines the preferences of four key arms-producing states towards European joint armaments programmes. The European defence market is characterised by a mixture of inter-state competition and European cooperation, and this work assesses why countries sometimes decide to cooperate with their partners, while in other instances they refrain from doing so. In order to shed light on this empirical puzzle, the book focuses on state-defence industry relations in the four major European arms producers: France, Germany, Italy and the UK. The main argument is that the public or private governance of industrial suppliers and market size are the two decisive variables that explain the simultaneous presence of cooperation and competition in European defence procurement. Specifically, it argues that in public governance ecosystems, arms industries are able to "capture" the state's decision-making processes to their own advantage.

This book analyses whether the EU's drift towards European strategic autonomy presents a challenge or a window of opportunity for its small member states to advance their security interests. The volume presents small states' perceptions of European strategic autonomy, highlighting their expectations and concerns. The chapters focus on the depth and breadth of European strategic autonomy, national security considerations, assessment of the impact on transatlantic relations, the expected outputs and its potential impact on the EU's institutional structure. It also shows how systemic circumstances and the interests of powerful states, either belonging to the EU (France, Germany, and Poland) or having a significant say in European security architecture (the US), establish opportunities and constraints for the small states to shape European strategic autonomy.

The European Standard EN 9100 is the industry-specific norm of the aerospace and defence industry. For cooperation with an aerospace company, certification according to this standard is usually mandatory for suppliers. This book provides support in understanding and implementing the standard or when switching from ISO 9001:2015 to EN 9100:2018.  After an introduction to the ISO 9001, the emphasis is placed on the core characteristics of EN 9100 and EN 9120. The book focuses primarily on the explanation and translation of the standards' text into the language of everyday business.

This book presents a fresh and original contribution to the debate on the policies and technologies needed to achieve a Greener Defence. It will provide an overall and comprehensive analysis of the current state and future prospects of the public and private discourse on the matter, by leveraging on four different and complementary perspectives: the national experiences of relevant NATO Member States and Partner Countries, the institutional framework of International Organizations, the role of industry and private companies and the intellectual contribution of research centers and academia. It will provide new policy recommendations and advanced and innovative technological solutions to be implemented in order to reduce the environmental footprint of Armed Forces, while improving at the same time the energy efficiency and strengthening the operational capabilities of Militaries.

This publication responds to the need for providing fresh insights into the new international order, the Russian Federation's aggressive war against Ukraine, the protection of people and borders, armaments, and finally, the threats caused by digitalisation, artificial intelligence and cyberspace. It is also a reflection of the achievements made in the field of security studies by the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw - Poland's leading academic centre. Three departments in the Faculty actively pursue this area of research: the Department of Internal Security, the Department of Strategic Studies and International Security and the Department of Information Technologies.
