Less than two months ago, on the 11th of March, the people of Greenland cast their votes. In April, a new government was confirmed by Greenland’s parliament. The outcome is a government based on a broad coalition. This is exactly how it should be. Government for the people, decided by the people. Any decisions over Greenland’s future should be decided in the same way: by the people of Greenland. Greenland and Denmark have both emphasised this.

Strategically located between the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean, Greenland is, as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, an Overseas Territory associated with the EU. It is the world’s largest island (20% of the total EU surface). With a population of around 56,000 people, it has globally the lowest population density (one inhabitant per 35 km2).

EU Polar Cluster
The EU Polar Cluster is a network of collaborative polar projects, which are funded by the European Commission, and four permanent members: the EPB, APECS, SIOS and EuroGOOS. The cluster thus merges a broad spectrum of research and coordination activities – ranging from the most up-to-date findings on permafrost and sea ice, from enhancing observation to improving predictions, and from networking research stations to coordinating access to icebreakers.

Founded in 1977 by the late Eben Hopson of Barrow, Alaska, the Inuit Circumpolar Council (ICC) has flourished and grown into a major international non-government organization representing approximately 180,000 Inuit of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Chukotka (Russia).
