87% of respondents agree that they feel they are citizens of the EU, with over six in ten totally agreeing. A consistent majority of citizens are aware of the specific rights conferred by EU citizenship. A large majority of respondents cherish the free movement of people within the EU, with 89% agreeing that it benefits them personally and 83% that it benefits the economy.

Democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights are the foundations on which the EU is based. The purpose of this survey was to collect information on EU citizens’ awareness on the state of democracy in their country and in the EU, as well as EU citizens’ perceptions of the possible threats that democratic institutions in the EU may be facing.
