In today’s data-driven exploration, we aim to deliver an analysis of the European Parliament elections through the lens of open data. This narrative serves three primary objectives: firstly, to present the structure of the most recent legislature, detailing its composition and the mechanisms of representation within the European Parliament; secondly, to review voter engagement over time; and lastly, to provide insights into the pivotal factors that are shaping the upcoming 2024 elections. Through data analysis, we seek to equip readers with a deeper understanding of the electoral process and the critical issues at stake, thereby fostering a more informed and engaged electorate.

European democracy is strengthened when citizens actively participate in political and civic life. The active involvement of Europe’s young citizens is especially important since the attitudes and opinions of young people foreshadow future trends and developments in society. But how are young people in Europe participating? Are they engaged in civil society?

87% of respondents agree that they feel they are citizens of the EU, with over six in ten totally agreeing. A consistent majority of citizens are aware of the specific rights conferred by EU citizenship. A large majority of respondents cherish the free movement of people within the EU, with 89% agreeing that it benefits them personally and 83% that it benefits the economy.

Democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights are the foundations on which the EU is based. The purpose of this survey was to collect information on EU citizens’ awareness on the state of democracy in their country and in the EU, as well as EU citizens’ perceptions of the possible threats that democratic institutions in the EU may be facing.
