- AI Act: Shaping Europe’s digital future | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
The AI Act is the first-ever legal framework on AI, which addresses the risks of AI and positions Europe to play a leading role globally.
- European AI Office | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
The European AI Office supports the development and use of trustworthy AI, while protecting against AI risks. The AI Office was established within the European Commission as the centre of AI expertise and forms the foundation for a single European AI governance system. The EU aims to ensure that AI is safe and trustworthy. For this purpose, the AI Act is the first-ever comprehensive legal framework on AI worldwide, guaranteeing the health, safety and fundamental rights of people, and providing legal certainty to businesses across the 27 Member States.
- European Artificial Intelligence Board (AI Board) | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
The AI Board includes representatives from each EU Member State and is supported by the AI Office within the European Commission, which serves as the Board's Secretariat. It is chaired by one of the EU Member States. The Board plays a crucial role in the governance framework set out by the AI Act, ensuring the effective implementation of the AI Act across the European Union. The European Data Protection Supervisor, and EEA-EFTA countries, participate in Board meetings as observers.
- A European approach to artificial intelligence | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
The EU’s approach to artificial intelligence centers on excellence and trust, aiming to boost research and industrial capacity while ensuring safety and fundamental rights.
- Ethics guidelines for trustworthy AI | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
On 8 April 2019, the High-Level Expert Group on AI presented Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence. This followed the publication of the guidelines' first draft in December 2018 on which more than 500 comments were received through an open consultation.
According to the Guidelines, trustworthy AI should be:
- (1) lawful - respecting all applicable laws and regulations;
- (2) ethical - respecting ethical principles and values;
- (3) robust - both from a technical perspective while taking into account its social environment.
- International outreach for human-centric artificial intelligence initiative | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
The international outreach for human-centric approach artificial intelligence project (InTouchAI.eu) aims to support the European Commission in setting up a framework for ethics and trust to enable the growth of AI. This is in accordance with EU values, and should prepare the ground for global coalition building in this field.
The European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI) and the Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), in collaboration with the European External Action Services (EEAS), launched a large foreign policy instrument project to engage with international partners on regulatory and ethical matters and promote the responsible development of trustworthy AI at global level.
- Science in society: Ethics | European Commission, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation
A database of projects and success stories of EU-funded research and innovation under the theme of ethics.
- European AI Alliance: Posts tagged with 'ethics' | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology
Since its launch in 2018, members of the AI Alliance engage in regular events, public consultations and online forum exchanges that shape the European ecosystem of excellence and trust in AI and robotics.
- AI Watch | European Commission, Joint Research Centre
Search the website for ‘ethics’.
AI Watch monitors industrial, technological and research capacity, policy initiatives in the Member States, uptake and technical developments of Artificial Intelligence and its impact in the economy, society and public services. It provides a number of analyses necessary to monitor and facilitate the implementation of the European strategy for AI.
AI Watch takes a holistic view of what is happening in AI, working with key partners from industry, academia, governments and inter-governmental organisations to provide detailed analysis and reliable data.
- The European Commission’s priority: A Europe fit for the digital age | European Commission, Directorate-General for Communication
Digital technology is changing people’s lives. The EU’s digital strategy aims to make this transformation work for people and businesses, while helping to achieve its target of a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. The Commission is determined to make this Europe's “Digital Decade”. Europe must now strengthen its digital sovereignty and set standards, rather than following those of others – with a clear focus on data, technology, and infrastructure.
- EU AI Act: First regulation on artificial intelligence | European Parliament
As part of its digital strategy, the EU wants to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure better conditions for the development and use of this innovative technology. AI can create many benefits, such as better healthcare; safer and cleaner transport; more efficient manufacturing; and cheaper and more sustainable energy.
- Topic: Artificial intelligence and ethics | European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS)
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is the European Union’s (EU) independent data protection authority. Its aim is to serve as an impartial center of excellence for enforcing and enforcing EU privacy and data protection standards, both in practice and in law.

OECD, UNESCO
- OECD AI Principles overview
The OECD AI Principles promote use of AI that is innovative and trustworthy and that respects human rights and democratic values. Adopted in May 2019, they set standards for AI that are practical and flexible enough to stand the test of time.
- Ethics of artificial intelligence | UNESCO
With its unique mandate, UNESCO has led the international effort to ensure that science and technology develop with strong ethical guardrails for decades.
Be it on genetic research, climate change, or scientific research, UNESCO has delivered global standards to maximize the benefits of the scientific discoveries, while minimizing the downside risks, ensuring they contribute to a more inclusive, sustainable, and peaceful world. It has also identified frontier challenges in areas such as the ethics of neurotechnology, on climate engineering, and the internet of things.
