The EU promotes and protects human rights, democracy and the rule of law worldwide. Human rights and democracy are inextricably connected. Only in a democracy can individuals fully claim and realise their civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights. Sustainable development and peace and security go hand-in-hand. One is not possible without the other, which is why we fully support our partner countries in their efforts to establish long-term stability.

The EU responds rapidly to crises, builds peace and helps to prevent conflicts around the world. It works with partner countries and organisations on effective responses to global and transregional threats to security and peace.

As a global actor, the EU promotes prevention and resolution of conflicts as a mean to support peace and prosperity around the world.

The 2021-2027 Global Europe thematic programme on Peace, Stability and Conflict Prevention (PS&CP) will focus its support on interventions that have a global or trans-regional impact and will serve a dual purpose: a) providing assistance to and build capacities for conflict prevention, peacebuilding and crisis preparedness; b) addressing global, trans-regional and emerging threats.

We reaffirm our commitment to a just and comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the two state solution, with the State of Israel and an independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign, and viable State of Palestine, living side by side in peace and security and mutual recognition, and with Jerusalem serving as the future capital of both states. For this purpose, the EU is active in the Middle East Peace Process.

The EU and Ukraine base their partnership on our common values of democracy, rule of law, respect for international law and human rights. Since Ukraine’s independence, the EU has stood by its strategic partner to help ensuring a stable, prosperous and democratic future for its citizens, and in June 2022, Ukraine was granted EU candidate status. We condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s illegal and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, are unwavering in our support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders and will support Ukraine and the Ukrainian people for as long as it takes.

The European Peace Facility (EPF) is an instrument aimed at enhancing the EU's ability to prevent conflicts, build and preserve peace and strengthen international security and stability.

The European Union Institute for Security Studies (EUISS) is the Union’s Agency analysing foreign, security and defence policy issues. Its core mission is to assist the EU and its member states in the implementation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), including the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) as well as other external action of the Union.
