EC Library Guide on the history of the European Commission: State of the Union addresses

State of the Union addresses by José Manuel Barroso1

In September each year, the President of the European Commission delivers the State of the Union address to the Parliament. The address takes stock of the achievements of the past year and presents the priorities for the year ahead. The President also sets out how the Commission will address the most pressing challenges the European Union faces and ideas for shaping the future of the EU (source: European Commission, State of the Union addresses, accessed on 2 April 2024).

Anchored in the Treaty of Lisbon, the State of the Union Address is set out in the 2010 Framework Agreement on relations between the European Parliament and the European Commission.
